Palin is "resigning as part of damage control" due to a scandal that is "not of a family nature." ...
"The governor would not be able to continue her job when it comes out," she told me on the phone just now, before adding: "Why would Mark Sanford not resign, but Sarah Palin did? Her family didn't even know about the resignation until they were standing with her by the lake" when she made her announcement.
Yes. It seems another shoe, apparently a big one, will indeed be dropping, likely within the next week or so. Perhaps earlier now that everyone will be poking around up there.
FURTHER UPDATE: Okay, I've now been able to get independent information from multiple sources that all of this precedes what are said to be possible federal indictments against Palin, concerning an embezzlement scandal related to the building of Palin's house and the Wasilla Sports Complex built during her tenure as Mayor. Both structures, it is said, feature the "same windows, same wood, same products." Federal investigators have been looking into this for some time, and indictments could be imminent, according to the Alaska sources.
The BRAD BLOG has not been able to receive confirm from any federal sources on this. Our information comes from local Alaskans who follow Palin, and who have been keeping an eye on this for some time, while keeping it quiet at the request of federal investigators.
Oh boy - this will take the spotlight off of MJ!
I'd expect another shoe to drop very soon
(tit for tat, since MJ took the spotlight from Iran's struggle for free and fair elections-where it belongs!!!)

Very interesting nearing.
Maybe the circus WILL come to Wasilla after all.
. Both structures, it is said, feature the "same windows, same wood, same products."
Having seen both they do look too similar and the new hospital in Wasilla bears resemblance as well.
I do know a bit about the construction process, when larger projects such as the sports complex, hospital etc are "bought out" they typically are considered "special run" for a manufacturer given size/scope as well as project specific requirements, that are not typically part of a "standard run" for most manufacturers/suppliers.
That these "similarities" exist between a commercial structure and a single family home are anomalous as well.
maybe she was following the Ted Stevens model of better building through corruption!
Did an embezzlement scandal force Sarah Palin to resign?
The gist of the rumor is that an Alaska building company called Spenard Building Supplies (SBS) was awarded a contract by Palin to build a hockey arena in Wasilla, AK, and in return, SBS helped construct Palin’s home:
Guys, I'm no Palin fan, but I wouldn't get too excited. Out in the sticks, there aren't a lot of suppliers. Buildings that are built in a time frame close to each other tend to look alike, cause Merle's building supply was the only one within 50 miles. Also, there tends to not be a huge difference between commercial and residential. I've built out in the boonies.
Darryl, the size of these projects would in no way shape or form justify a special run for a manufacturer.
Don't beat me up, I don't like her one bit, but I do try to keep an open mind. Rabidly repeating rumors in print doesn't seem like the right thing to do.
Son
You are probably right. I practically fenestrated a whole house with over-runs and project discards. Actually I was kinda pissed that I couldn't find a use for the famous flying glass panels that they removed from the Hancock Building in Boston before they killed someone. They were only $50 bucks a piece.
Maybe Sarah got a deal. Maybe they fell off a truck.
Thanks Mike. I have no clue if I'm right, I'm just saying what my experience has shown and that I try to maintain an open and curious mind. I could have found a use for your glass panels as deck screens on the coast in Oregon where it's VERY windy. They would have been perfect. Oh well, stuff happens.
This deal was investigated by a dailykos blogger last October, great in depth read on the Palin's home. Todd: "I built the house with the help of a few buddies"
Except now the Feds are involved - it is a continuation of the VECO scandal that took out Ted Stevens. I'm willing to bet that she resigned today because the Alaskan blogger that has been digging at this story since Palin became Governor finally got her FOIA request in for Palin's emails on the issue.
I guess we'll see. The rush to judgement seems a bit unseemly.
It might seem weird, but in the sticks, building a house with the help of a few buddies is what actually happens. I guess it's hard to understand for some of you, but there are still people who do things for each other without some sort of government program.
Helping out a buddy isn't what this is about. When Sarah was mayor of Wasilla, the city awarded a $500,000 contract to design a sports complex to the architecture firm of a campaign contributor. The contract to build the $12.5 million complex then went to another campaign contributor. The building supplies provided by yet another Palin supporter. It just so happened that Todd and Sarah got a new house built at the same time, using the same materials on land purchased by the city...
Sarah managed to increase the city debt for Wasilla to nearly $25 million during her tenure as mayor. Many people found her running for VP as a champion of ethics reform to be laughable. She will be indicted - just wait.
It just so happened that Todd and Sarah got a new house built at the same time, using the same materials on land purchased by the city...
If that's the case, she is clearly in deep.
She will be indicted - just wait.
My point is that I am waiting, some of you are not, and have already convicted her. Not exactly the definition of open mindedness.
As I've previously stated, I am in no way shape or form a fan of Ms Palin. I am a fan of the truth.
So either she's an incredibily stupid politican who guilty of pork barrel spending of ridiculous proportions, or she's a corrupt hypocrite who robs the very people adorlingly support her and her small government rhetoric. You'd think that'd be a wake up call to all these ridiculous Libertarians about expecting politicans to be the magic bullet that kills politicans, but I'm sure they'll find some way to rationalize it.
Adrian, do you have any understanding of what it means to have an open mind? Just because you read some things on the internet doesn't necessarily mean they're true.
Your statement regarding Libertarians would seem to be nonsensical. You are aware that she's a Republican, not a Libertarian, yes?
As a registered Libertarian, I take some umbrage at that comment.
"Just because you read some things on the internet doesn't necessarily mean they're true."
Do you recognize the irony of chastizing me for not being open-minded, and then immediately assuming I said what I said because I'm a partisan who absorbed it passively from the internet?
"You are aware that she's a Republican, not a Libertarian, yes?"
Did I say she was a Libertarian? Why no, no I didn't. I was referring the support she enjoys from Libertarians, not any Libertarian leanings on her part.
Actually, I have never heard a SINGLE libertarian voice support for Sad Sarah. I think she is as repugnant to them as she is to pretty much any thinking person.
Four seconds of searching on Google
VP Candidate getting Libertarian's hopes up?
The Libertarian Case for Sarah Palin
Sarah Palin's Libertarian Streak
The article from the Libertarian Party isn't that bad, but it seems more like they're upset that she wasn't running for president more than anything else.
And my personal favorite:
Two of those are lukewarm Palin is better than the Dems sorts of arguments, two of the others are apologia for her more aberrant beliefs.
I have yet to hear a single Libertarian support Sad Sarah.
This thread is crawling with Libertarians, let's see if one shows up to support her.
So either she's an incredibily stupid politican who guilty of pork barrel spending of ridiculous proportions, or she's a corrupt hypocrite who robs the very people adorlingly support her and her small government rhetoric.
Adrian, nice to know that we're in the presence of a true psychic. I can see why you don't need an open mind, since you know everything.
Pretty funny that your response to my statement about not believing what you read on the internet is to provide links to 4 opinion blogs and one to what appears to be a Libertarian web page, where they spend a lot more time talking about what's wrong with Ms Palin that what's right. Just in case you don't get it, anybody can say anything they want on their blog.
I firmly stand behind my statement about not believing everything you read on the internet.
Your responses only prove my point.
How about Charles Murray?
How about Charles Murray?
"Adrian, nice to know that we're in the presence of a true psychic."
Glad you appreciate me.
"our response to my statement about not believing what you read on the internet"
Oh please. Iceman stated that he hadn't heard a SINGLE libertarian support Palin, so I went in search of a SINGLE libertarian that did. You're conflating my point regarding the fallacy of depending on the government for government change with some broad statement about Sarah's political leanings - its not. I PERSONALLY know Libertarians who were fond of Palin, who engaged me in long debates regarding whether or not people like Sarah Palin were examples of genuine integrity in Washington. Rather than dismissing me as being close minded simply because I have a dissenting opinion, I suggest you consider the possibility that NOT ALL LIBERTARIANS SHARE YOUR PERSONAL OUTLOOK.
PS - The Charles Murray comment wasn't directed at you.
You totally missed my point. Ms Palin hasn't even been charged, there are just rumors that she might be, but you posted this:
So either she's an incredibily stupid politican who guilty of pork barrel spending of ridiculous proportions, or she's a corrupt hypocrite who robs the very people adorlingly support her and her small government rhetoric.
I guess then in your mind there's no chance of a 3rd possibility, that these are just rumors and might actually be wrong.
How open minded is that?
Hahahaha. I didn't even read your post Sons, I was just scrolling down this article and caught a glimpse of madgvar's comment. The construction of the sports complex isn't a "rumor", its a fact, therefore there ARE only two options:
Option A) She was stupid enough to buy materials from the very company that was also building the sports complex, thus making it look like she was paid off and therefore making it possible for rumors to abound
or
Option B) She really is crooked, she really was paid off, and she really is a hypocrite.
My open-mindedness doesn't come before my rationality.
Where all those GOP campaign contribution-bought clothes ever itemized and returned?
Thats quite a stylish red pantsuit she had on today.
"Don't believe everything you think"...
Option A) She was stupid enough
Option B) She really is crooked, she really was paid off, and she really is a hypocrite
I think I will go with a small portion of Option A)...and the entirety of Option B)
Where is the Son of Liberty? I do believe I deserve a response....
Nearing, I had heard that she had been acquitted or cleared on all charges a few weeks ago. Is this something new?
Oliver:
I had heard that she had been acquitted or cleared on all charges a few weeks ago. Is this something new?
Perhaps what you heard about was some other ethics charges. She has had a plethora of them over the past few years.
This one is federal as far as I know.
Ok Thank you.
UPDATE:
Shannyn Moore to Sarah Palin: Sue Me! Please!
Ms. Moore is the one in this article who intially gave Brad Friedman the low-down on this scandal.
MJ took the spotlight from Iran's struggle for free and fair elections-where it belongs
Maybe sara darling is quiting to go to Iran and champion the fight!
Now THAT would be a headline!
Maybe sara darling is quiting to go to Iran and champion the fight!
Now THAT would be a headline!
Darryl, I admire your imagination.
As a single dad raising two daughters this was always a fear of mine, albeit one that never came to fruition. Mind you this is a stretch but I'm going to posit it anyway....
It's a long shot but so was my suited Ace - two that became as nut flush in Reno last month!
Darryl, I admire your imagination.
fairly easy, try and figure the thing that is farthest away from reality, and you begin to see some of Sara's world.
And boy, what a scary place that is!
No I think it is about something bigger than someone pregnant... I think she is so stupid and so ambitious... that she just may believe she could get away with embezzelment. I am gonna wait this one out and keep my eyes open... thanks Nearing. soon as I saw the headline, and heard the ridiculous speach, I knew there was more too it.
This time Willow is pregnant at 14 and it happened in Sarah's own home.
Maybe she did get knocked up in the 7th inning by A-Rod.
Letterman's sweet vindication!
Maybe sara darling is quiting to go to Iran and champion the fight!
@!$%#, I wouldn't wish that on the poor Iranians!
When she said she was going to support the military, I was wondering if she was planning to be on some USO entertainment tour.
That's true, USO could have her do a "tight 10" on current events. Given her lack of knowledge, background and reasoning that ought to be the best unintended comedy EVER. It certainly was with Couric.
Maybe she is quitting to provide her sharply focused intellectual leadership to the new emerging GOP, I hear they are going to change the color of their sheets to match her eyes.
I hear they are going to change the color of their sheets to match her eyes.
Bwahahaaaa!!
Whatever it is, you know its going to be hilarious. I'm either hoping for "she's pocketing Stimulus funds" or "serial abortionist".
You can be sure it will be some right wing "family value" thing.
Those folks are REALLY good at prancing around waving their fingers, not so good at living the life. Maybe they can name their new party the Hypocricans.
I can't wait to find out what's chasing her out of office - whatever it is, I hope it sends her into oblivion and not into the realm of TV/radio GOP spokesperson. We've got enough nutcases out there spreading insanity (Rush*cough*Limbaugh*cough*).
I hope it sends her into oblivion and not into the realm of TV/radio GOP spokesperson.
If she pulls a Rove, I hope that will be the impetus for most of America to throw their tvs out of the window- finally.
Television is toxic.
There are VERY few people I dislike as much as I dislike Sarah Palin. I know it is bad Kharma, but I want to see her in tears with handcuffs, being perp-walked off to start a long prison term. She FED on all that is worst in America, bigotry, hate, small mindedness, and willful ignorance. Good bye to her and good riddance.
iceman, you may get your wish.
see the update at #1.1!
Yeh, but I will have to live with the Karma.
iceman where will you get your humour with the right side of the political spectrum....I know you have had many many many discussions on the intelligence of Gov palin and her leadership skills....I can't wait until Monday to bring this up with those that beleive in gov Palin's?
DS04,
There is NO shortage of comedic material on the right: Palin, Rush, Ensign, Sanford, "the new GOP", creationists, etc. They are practically standing in line waiting for their turn in the barrel. I do, BTW, consider kids off limits and Letterman's comments were simply wrong.
The left is harder, except for the occassional nonsense like Boxer and the General, what a self-impressed little @!$%# that woman is (and I said so in clear ringing prose). But, as I said, the left is harder. In most cases, the left is arguing positions based on their own thoughts and I try not to to hit too hard. I want to encourage INDIVIDUAL thinking as mush as possible, even when it is flawed.
The right has a REAL tendency to come out with the standard badly thought out talking points du jour. They seem to work from their "received wisdom" without stopping to question it at all, NO thought involved. I admit that kind of thing just annoys me and the gloves come off. The appropriate punishment for non-thinking adherence to nonsense is to be ridiculed.
Oh, and while we are at it, I have a pet peeve, namely hypocrisy. These clowns who spend their lives prancing around spouting the whole "family values" line to ingratiate themselves with their "base" all the while LIVING a VERY different set of values. Those clowns get vitriol, pure and unrefined. Yes, I know that one is a flaw in my character, but is one I choose to live with.
I'd feel more confident in this supposed news story if it was from a blog ran by Dan Rather.
And, I guess this is "news", although it reads like opinion.
You're right, this is probably as credible as a story on Bat boy, but I do think its curious that she'd quit all of a sudden.
I'd feel more confident in this supposed news story if it was from a blog ran by Dan Rather.
That is what was said by many before Sanford came clean.
That is what was said by many before Sanford came clean.
Yes, and tea is very inexpensive in China.
The source of the article seed looks rather "National Enquirer-ish". Can we trust it?
Sure, why not, we are always listening to nonsense from Faux News and World Nut Daily.
Brad Friedman is an accomplished independent reporter.
His specialty is elections.
Libs dont need to trust any thing. It all about Hate jbired just read the posts above
Who did what now?
Tim,
You are right in one respect, most liberals don't have a lot of use for "trust" and "belief". For the most part we tend to use individual reason as the basis for our positions. Trust, belief, that whole "received wisdom" thing not really our bag.
Libs dont need to trust any thing. It all about Hate jbired just read the posts above
Don't worry Tim. If nothing comes of this I will come back to this thread and apologise. I said the same thing before Sanford confessed his "sins" and guess what.....I never had to go back.
Trust, belief....I prefer logic.
And logic tells me that Ms Palin is probably going to go down.
I might be wrong - it happened once before (I think it was fall of '78), but I doubt it. I'm not rushing to judgement, and will retain an open mind as this story develops. But Occam's Razor is slicing pretty close to the Palin bone this time, you betcha.
Who remembers the scandal from Gov Mark Sanford when we have this?
Great cover and diversion if nothing else.
Na, people aren't forgetting that the Republican party is imploding on itself. The name changes from week to week, but we aren't forgetting that they were Republicans.
I, like many others that have posted on other threads, feel that there is a scandal in the wings. Resigning before end of term seems idotic even for Palin, and her composure / body language helped fuel the suspicion. And if there is any truth to this, won't she be looking at prison, and probably her husband as well?
Want Palin's e-mails? That'll be $15 million
Why? Because lawyers need printouts so they can black out, or "redact," private or exempted information.
That task is more difficult because Palin and her senior staff have used government e-mail accounts for some personal correspondence, and personal e-mail accounts for much of their government correspondence.
The photocopies of those printouts will be a relative bargain, only 10 cents a page. A state administrator said he understood that such redaction could be done electronically, but that state offices weren't set up to do that.
If there is a scandal forcing her to resign, it must be a whopper. There is not much she would not try to brazen out.
got to agree with you there!
Yeah, that's a fact.
This ain't no walk in the Buenos Aires Appalachian Trail!
IF... IF Palin gets into legal trouble... Roach Lamebaugh will have a heart attack...
Again... IF... :)
One can always hope.
All right, you beat me to that punch.
Nicely said.
I wonder if Pat Buchanan is in mourning today ; )
Bye bye Sarah!
For those of you who haven't watched the pornography movie "Who's Nailin' Palin?", I highly recommend you watch it. Awesome movie. Lisa Ann, Nina Hartley - excellent porn stars. Great scenes.
That's all that I'm going to remember Sarah Palin for --- a porn movie. That's all that she's worth.
I realize I don't have a life, and I don't care what comments I'm going to get for what I've said above. But, it's a great porn flick!
Cheers!
Just stopping by to see what credible source you are using... ah "Brad's blog" . Well, see ya.
You obviously don't know Brad Friedman's work very well.
Good news rarely follows a politician when the have a friday press release. The general rule is good news on monday, bad news on friday. When bad press goes out friday, the theory is the public pays less attention to it.
What ever the reason for Sarah's suprise announcement, its PROBABLY not good.
I am cautiously skeptical about this, although it seems to be a common scandal Alaskan politicians are entangled in, Like Stevens, even though the Bush justice dept lackeys screwed up the prosecution of.
I'm sure it could be easily demonstrated through receipts from the supplier and at least some contractors that were not "buddies" with Todd that would be required to build a 3,500 square foot home. The deductibles they claimed for the labor and materials for home improvement and the like. Surely anybody who has undertaken such a large undertaking would have detailed records for about 90 to 95% of those expenditures.
If not ,Sarah and Todd might not be so lucky to have Bush league legal genius' of the Bush admin pursuing the investigation.
I agree - proper receipts would end this speculation. Then we could go on to the next one.............LOL
If in fact there is a federal investigation going on now concerning Palin, who initiated it? The reason I ask is because I feel Newt and Rommey wanted her out of the picture. Could it be GOP cannabalism at work again? Clearing the field for 2012? I think I can safely say the Democrats were looking forward to Palin for 2012 for 2 reasons, one for entertainment and the other to secure the reelection of Pres Obama. Irregardless of Palins popularity, she did poorly with women, which are the majority of voters.
It also stands to reason the GOP base would have insisted she be on the 2012 GOP ticket since that was a strong point of hers. My first thought upon hearing of her resignation was the GOP pushed her out some how, be it fact or fiction, time will tell.
Sarah is a terrible speaker she only does well when fully scripted. She is a one trick pony and refuses to learn.
The GOP is better off without her.
I'm hoping a porn movie.
Tony
Movie ... ? Is that the one where Todd wears the Bullwinkle costume XXXX
The topic here is the possible financial scandal, folks.
On that note, all I can say is remember Duke Cunningham? San Diego does.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_Cunningham
Sure, there are a lot of differences. But there are a lot of similarities to Palin too. Another crass right-wing hypocrite with scandals in real estate, government projects, family issues...
What's sad is that Americans have become apathetic to corruption. It's just another day in paradise.
And it shouldn't be.
well said, watersportgirl!
This is just insane. With that fool Mark Sanford out in 2012, Palin is gearing up for a Presidential Run. She is setting herself up to be the front runner. This article is just from a liberal blog with no quoted sources. That's not journalism, its a beserk rant by a mad man.
from the Village Voice on 10/8/08...
THE $12.5 MILLION sports complex and hockey rink that is the lasting monument to Palin's two terms as Wasilla mayor is also a monument to the kind of insider politics that dismays Americans of both parties. Six months before Palin stepped down as mayor in October 2002, the city awarded nearly a half-million-dollar contract to design the biggest project in Wasilla history to Kumin Associates. Blase Burkhart was the Kumin architect on the job-the son of Roy Burkhart, who is frequently described as a "mentor" of Palin and was head of the local Republican Party (his wife, June, who also advised Palin, is the national committeewoman). Asked if the contract was a favor, Roy Burkhart, who contributed to her campaign in the same time frame that his son got the contract, said: "I really don't know." Palin then named Blase Burkhart to a seven-member builder-selection committee that picked Howdie Inc., a mostly residential contractor owned at the time by Howard Nugent. Formally awarded the contract a couple of weeks after Palin left office, Nugent has donated $4,000 to Palin campaigns. Two competitors protested the process that led to Nugent's contract.
...
A list of subcontractors on the job, obtained by the Voice, includes many with Palin ties. One was Spenard Builders Supply, the state's leading supplier of wood, floor, roof, and other "pre-engineered components." In addition to being a sponsor of Todd Palin's snow-machine team that has earned tens of thousands for the Palin family, Spenard hired Sarah Palin to do a statewide television commercial in 2004. When the Palins began building a new family home off Lake Lucille in 2002—at the same time that Palin was running for lieutenant governor and in her final months as mayor—Spenard supplied the materials, according to Antoine Bricks, who works in its Wasilla office.
...
Todd Palin told Fox News that he built the two-story, 3,450-square-foot, four-bedroom, four-bath, wood house himself, with the help of contractors he described as "buddies." As mayor, Sarah Palin blocked an effort to require the filing of building permits in the wide-open city, and there is no public record of who the "buddies" were.

Sorry, but that doesn't sound like the beserk rantings of a mad man.
It sounds like corruption.
The BRAD BLOG has not been able to receive confirm from any federal sources on this. Our information comes from local Alaskans who follow Palin, and who have been keeping an eye on this for some time, while keeping it quiet at the request of federal investigators
Withholding judgment until something more concrete appears.
PS: Was it just me or did someone else read the title and assume that Palin was part of a scandal involving an iceberg?
It felt big time that Palin's decision was the tip of an iceberg. The iceberg being the scandal looming. And as far as this being information from a blogger, no one knew the iceberg was under the water either until the Titannic hit it. Just like Palin, too, the captain of the Titannic was too smug in his belief nothing could harm them. Foolish ego goes before the fall.
