Under Iraq troop pact, U.S. can't leave any forces behind

The status of forces of agreement between the United States and Iraq is now called the withdrawal agreement, and that's exactly what it is: an ultimate end to the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq.

If Iraq's parliament endorses the agreement, in six weeks American forces would have to change the way they operate in Iraq, and all U.S. combat troops, police trainers and military advisers would have to leave the country by Dec. 31, 2011. President-elect Barack Obama's campaign plan to leave a residual force of some 30,000 American troops in Iraq would be impossible under the pact.

Unless the agreement is amended, which would require the formal written approval of both sides, in three years there no longer would be any legal basis for U.S. armed forces or civilian contractors of the Department of Defense to remain in Iraq.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

No US troops left behind?

Doesn't that just guarantee the intervention of the "ineffective" UN at a later date? Another chance for all the divided nations to argue about Iraq.

So Iraq is about to be a country that governs itself now. Thats a good thing. Hopefully they can keep their nation a moderate one where the different groups can live in peace. A heavy price was paid by all to achieve this.

Prediction. Iraq will not be a democracy in 10 years. It will be ruled by a Islamist govt. in much the same way as Iran.

The fanatics will eventually take over (with the aid of Iran and by coup if ness.) and there will be little secular support to prevent it.

Very possible. Have to say I always thought that we should just support the Kurds and let the others work it out themselves. MIght have gone that way too, except for our alliance with Turkey.

Well I guess we can call it a victory and finish our other 2 tasks, finding Bin Ladens body and getting the Taliban out of Afganistan.  If the Pakistanis want them they can have them, we just want bin Laden.

I agree our young men and women are under enough stress. We should concentrate our efforts we they should have been from the beginning, looking for Bin Laden.

While it's good news that we're discussing withdrawal with the Iraqis, it's ridiculous that the terms are "secret".  This story includes a link to the full terms of the withdrawal:
