Canadian officials played an "indirect" role in the wrongful jailing and torture of three Canadian nationals in Syria and Egypt, an inquiry said Tuesday.

The probe, led by retired Supreme Court judge Frank Iacobucci, began in March behind closed doors to determine if the trio was mistreated abroad and whether Canadian authorities shared intelligence with their counterparts in these countries, as alleged.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

It is so.
"No one is to blame, all very unfortunate about the torture bit. Nasty stuff, that. Well now, I suggest that you go and get on with your life. There's a good fellow..."

This probably won't be the end of it. If Arar gets justice, so should these men.

We do not "look up" to anyone in particular, as we are our own nation, proud and free. We are however economically and culturally joined at the hip with you, our American cousins. The US-Canada partnership is the largest in the world, some $500+ million a day flowing across the border. While good neighbours, like Mexico we have learned to be wary.

Porfirio Diaz, the Mexican dictator said “Poor Mexico, so far from God and so close to the United States.” Our late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau said "Living next to the United States is a little like sleeping with an elephant. You always wonder if they will roll over on you."

Ha!  I can imagine!

Never the less I hold Canada to a higher standard than the US.

Screw it!  You guys have more natural resources than you can possibly use in a thousand years.

Let go of the partnership, put all of your military along the border and tell us to @!$%# off.  You guys have all you need to live without us!  Hell, take Alaska, if you want!

I recommend all countries sever ties to the US until they agree to abide by the Geneva Conventions and put the Bush admin in jail for what they have done!

(I know I am living a fairy-tale dream here, but let me have a little hope, k?)

    @ nearing

We don't want Alaska. We have enough North as it is. Ya think we want to deal with the Alaska Independence Party? We already have one in Quebec! We'll take Tampa, Orlando and Maui please. With fries and hold the pickle.

AFA severing ties with the USA, fergit it, Bub. 85% of our economy depends on you guys. We are making free trade noise with Europe: eggs in one basket kinda thing. Also, Yanks own a lot of Canadian companies and land, especially waterfront.

Abide by the Geneva Conventions? The US can't even abide by its own Constitution, but I guess Geneva is as good a place to start as any. Correction: Gitmo.
