In April, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) became the most absent member of the Senate.

According to the Washington Post's votes database, McCain has "missed 367 votes (61.4%) during the current Congress."

In fact, CQ reports today that McCain hasn't voted in the Senate since April 8.

Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) last voted on June 4.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Well, maybe he can't afford the airfare.

Wait, his wife has a private jet that his campaign uses.

Hmm, maybe his memory is beginning to fail and he just forgets when the votes are.

Wait, we all have computers and calendars with alarms.

Hmm, maybe he JUST DOESN'T GIVE A RAT'S ASS about the issues that affect Americans.

No, a voting record would mean he would have to commit to something and either piss of the Christian Taliban or the Independents and he needs both to have a snowball's chance in hell of winning in November. He needs to be on the record as little as possible until then.

That is an excellent question.

This is a matter of opinion and should not be taken too lightly. Hmm, I'll say - every other time.

Anybody else care to opine?

I know that I'm expected to show up at work 90-95% of the time. To be generous I'll say senators should vote 80% of the time.

80% might be unreasonable, given that a Senator can very well be at work and miss a vote. Senators are in an average of something like a dozen committees and subcommittees. If you're from an agricultural state, you might skive a vote on some kind of fishing regulations to weigh in on an amendment to the Farm Bill in the Agriculture Committee.

They have Commitees meet when the Senate is voting? Admittedly I'm not that familiar with the day-to-day working of the senate, but I'd like to think that my Senatorss are taking every opportunity to represent my interests.

I think the Senate floor is always doing something, which might include a motion for a roll call vote at any time. If they still do it, they can even operate short of a quota by dissolving into the 'Committee of the Whole,' an old Parliament trick.

"They have Commitees meet when the Senate is voting? "

While watching C-Span coverage of a committee meeting they adjourned so the Senators could go vote and the committee meeting resumed an hour later -- so, from seeing that, I think the committees (being made up of all Senators) are fairly accommodating to a Senator's schedule...

"John McCain has missed 367 votes (61.4%) during the current Congress. "

It seems logical that McCain should also miss 61.4% of his paycheck.

(Or, on second thought, maybe it is better if McCain is absent...)

I would say his attitudes are a bit more than the lack of votes. He has made comments like he thought we were all better off economically after 7 years of bush.. which shows he did not know as yet the desire of the american people for an economic change of course as well. so at least at the time he did not give a "rats ass" enough to know what the general american public thought on an important subject. after being burned on it, he has since brushed up. and wow all of a sudden he is aware of the recession and wants to continue bush's policies to cure it. lol as for the votes.. you should be automatically kicked out if you cant maintain at least 50% attendance and I'm being liberal.

I bet McCain would pull a Lieberman and run for Senate and President at the same time, as Joe did (for Senate and VP) in 2000.

McCain's a disgrace. I knew he didn't vote often, but this is unreal, could a McCain supporter please justify this? Will he be as absent if he wins the presidency? As unwilling to commit to anything?

Republicans like to tell us that Obama is the most liberal senator. I'll take that over "most absent" anyday.

Nice drive-by try, but he actually voted "yea" on "An original concurrent resolution setting forth the congressional budget for the United States Government for fiscal year 2009 and including the appropriate budgetary levels for fiscal years 2008 and 2010 through 2013." Most Senators, including Obama and McCain, didn't vote on the other measure voted on that day.

I think that's a question we should ask of all 45 Senators who withheld their votes. Were there a bunch of committee votes going on at the same time or something? Was it something far more sinister? We probably won't get to know.

Barry leads 8-1 on votes since April and most of them were nothing motions anyway. But today was a biggie at least if you believe the posturing from Russ Feingold and the Senator from Countrywide:

My point is simply that if one examines most of the Senate votes for the time period in question you will see that few of them were on substantive matters where one vote one way or the other would make much difference. Vote counting in the respective caucuses is the job of each party's whip. Had John Kyl informed Mitch McConnell that McCain's vote was critical to a measure I'm sure he would have voted. The same is true for Obama and Harry Reid and Barbara Boxer. This is a non-issue and typical of what I was talking about above with the type of nonsense that goes on at this stage of a campaign in the media.
