Constitutional scholars question plan to cordon off neighborhoods

Constitutional scholars threw cold water on DC Mayor Adrian Fenty's plan to quarantine violent neighborhoods, warning that the effort to establish sealed off zones may well be headed for court.
"It's still a free country," said District Councilwoman Mary Cheh, D-Ward 3, a constitutional law professor at George Washington University. "You can travel where you want and not have to explain yourself to police."
The Examiner reported Wednesday that Fenty and his police chief, Cathy Lanier, want cops to shut down violent neighborhoods and throw up roadblocks, checking identification for anyone coming or going. Anyone without "a legitimate reason" to be in the neighborhood will be ordered out or face arrest.

It's good to hear that someone is putting up some roadblocks to those proposed roadblocks. It is so surreal that authorities seem to think nothing of trying these stunts. Appallingly surreal.

Why don't they build a wall around these neighbourhoods and be done with it? Supplies could be airlifted in to the stores, deprive the residents of cash, make them pay using food stamps and clothing vouchers, and withdraw any circulating cash.
No cash=no booze, or drugs. No "Black Market" deals. Just leave them to rot in their own violent little world.
They would soon get fed up, or start killing each other, then there would be less for the New World Order to deal with! (Satire)

I read that article--don't even know what to say...
Right now--I live about 3 minutes from Regan Airport--if I wanted to swim the Potomac, I could be in D.C. in minutes. The entire time I've been here, I've been perplexed at the lack of infrastructure and the extremes in income---don't get me started on the cost of living. Insanity.
The police are desperate--it is that bad. Our Capital is that stratified--I don't agree with what they are doing, but am sympathetic with what they are trying to do. Stop the bleeding.
In reality--our Capital is a magnified prism of the problems of the nation. Other than affordable housing, (less than 1,800 a month for a 1 bedroom apt--stable social infrastructure,and quality schools with employment opportunities that pay a livable wage)-- I don't have any answers.
